FCL stands for Full Container Load. It means one importer books an entire container exclusively for their goods, including 20ft, 40ft and 40HQ containers. The container does not need to be fully loaded, as long as the whole space is reserved for a single shipper.
This shipping mode is ideal for large-volume cargo, heavy goods and regular bulk shipments, as it reduces repeated handling and potential risks.
The most common FCL container sizes are 20ft, 40ft, and 40HQ. A 20ft container is often suitable for heavy but smaller-volume cargo, while a 40ft or 40HQ container is better for bulky cargo. Although a 40ft container usually has a higher total price than a 20ft container, it may offer a lower cost per cubic meter.
Container Type | Best For | Cost Feature |
20ft container | Heavy cargo or smaller volume | Lower total cost, limited space |
40ft container | Large-volume shipments | Better cost per CBM in many cases |
40HQ container | Lightweight but bulky goods | More space, popular for e-commerce goods |
2. Shipping Route & Destination Port
The port pair has a major impact on the total cost. Shipping from China to the U.S. West Coast is usually faster and often cheaper than shipping to the U.S. East Coast because the sailing distance is shorter. However, the best route depends on the final delivery address, not only the destination port.
Common China Ports | Common U.S. Ports |
Shanghai | Los Angeles / Long Beach |
Ningbo | Oakland |
Shenzhen | Seattle |
Guangzhou | New York |
Qingdao | Savannah |
Xiamen | Houston |
3. Incoterms
Incoterms decide which party pays for different parts of the shipment. The same container can have a very different total cost depending on whether the trade term is EXW, FOB, CIF, or DDP.
Incoterm | What It Means for the Buyer |
EXW | Buyer pays almost all shipping costs from the factory. |
FOB | Seller handles export process in China; buyer pays ocean freight and U.S. costs. |
CIF | Seller pays ocean freight to the U.S. port; buyer pays destination charges. |
DDP | Forwarder or seller handles shipping, customs, duties, and final delivery. |
FOB and DDP are the most widely used options. FOB gives buyers more control over freight cost, while DDP is easier for buyers who want a complete delivery solution.
4. Shipping Season
FCL rates often rise during peak seasons, especially before major shopping periods, holidays, or capacity shortages. When demand increases, carriers may add surcharges such as Peak Season Surcharge, fuel surcharge, or congestion-related fees.
· Back-to-school season
· Black Friday and Christmas
· Chinese New Year
· Major U.S. sales events
· Tariff or policy change periods
5. Cargo Type
Special cargo (fragile, dangerous, oversized goods) will generate extra handling fees and insurance fees, increasing the total FCL cost.
A complete FCL quote includes all fees across the whole shipping chain.
· Origin charges in China: Pickup, export customs clearance, port handling, documentation, and loading fees.
· Ocean freight: The main cost of moving the container from a Chinese port to a U.S. port.
· Destination charges in the USA: Terminal handling, customs clearance, port fees, warehouse fees, chassis fees, and final delivery.
· Customs duties and taxes: Costs based on HS code, product value, country of origin, and U.S. import regulations.
· Extra fees: Fuel surcharge, peak season surcharge, demurrage, detention, inspection fees, and cargo insurance.
For small shipments, LCL shipping is usually cheaper because the importer pays only for the space used. For larger shipments, FCL often becomes more cost-effective because the importer controls the full container and avoids many shared-container handling steps.
Shipping Method | Best For | Cost Logic |
FCL | Large shipments | Pay for the whole container |
LCL | Small shipments | Pay by CBM or chargeable weight |
Air Freight | Urgent or high-value goods | Pay mainly by chargeable weight |
As a practical rule, when cargo volume reaches around 15 CBM or more, FCL may become more competitive than LCL. The exact break-even point depends on the route, cargo type, port charges, and delivery address.
Port-to-port shipping covers transportation from the origin port in China to the destination port in the USA. Door-to-door shipping covers the full process from the supplier or factory in China to the final address in the USA.
Service Type | Includes | Best For |
Port-to-port | Ocean freight only | Experienced importers |
Door-to-door | Pickup, ocean freight, customs, delivery | Buyers who want easier handling |
DDP door-to-door | Shipping, customs, duties, final delivery | E-commerce sellers and small businesses |
1. Choose the right container size: Do not book a 40HQ if a 20ft or 40ft container is enough.
2. Plan shipments earlier: Avoid last-minute bookings during peak season.
3. Compare destination ports: A different port may reduce total delivery cost.
4. Optimize packaging: Better carton and pallet arrangement can improve container space usage.
5. Avoid demurrage and detention: Prepare documents early and arrange pickup quickly after arrival.
6. Work with an experienced freight forwarder: A good forwarder can compare routes, carriers, schedules, and total landed cost.
