China to US Ocean Transit Times by Port: Port-to-Port vs Door-to-Door

Many importers ask one simple question: how long will my container take? The answer depends on two things. The first is the U.S. port that receives the cargo. The second is the part of the trip that the quote covers. This guide explains China to USA sea freight transit time by port. It also compares port-to-port time with door-to-door time.

Port-to-Port vs Door-to-Door: Two Simple Definitions

Transit time is the number of days cargo spends moving from one point to another.

Port-to-port time covers the ocean voyage only. It starts when the ship leaves a Chinese port, such as Shanghai. It stops when the ship reaches a U.S. port, such as Los Angeles.

Door-to-door time covers the whole trip. It starts at the supplier's factory in China. It ends at the buyer's warehouse, store, or Amazon FBA center in the United States. Efan Logistics arranges this kind of trip through its sea freight service.

West Coast ports face Asia, so ships reach them first. East Coast ports need a longer route.

The academic guide Port Economics, Management and Policy compares routes from Shanghai (Notteboom et al.). A ship reaches Los Angeles or Long Beach in about 14 days. A ship that sails to New York through the Panama Canal needs about 28 days. Some East Coast cargo lands in Los Angeles first. A train then carries it east in 5 to 8 more days.

Ship to Los Angeles, then train

About 14 days + 5–8 days by rail

These numbers assume a ship speed of 16 knots and no stops at other ports (Notteboom et al.). Real services often stop at several ports, so real sailing times can be longer. The same source says a detour around Africa may add about 5 days to a Shanghai to New York trip. It also notes that water shortages cut Panama Canal traffic in 2023 and 2024.

This guide does not have verified public figures for Oakland, Savannah, or Houston. Importers should check the current carrier schedule before booking. Efan's guide to the largest ports in North America gives more background on these ports.

Port-to-Port vs Door-to-Door: How Big Is the Gap?

Door-to-door time is always longer. The cargo must wait at the terminal, clear customs, and travel inland.

Transport Canada tracks end-to-end trip times from Shanghai to Chicago (Transport Canada). These trips include the ocean voyage and the inland leg.

2022

Via Los Angeles / Long Beach

34.5 days

42.0 days

Via Seattle / Tacoma

34.1 days

47.6 days

The ocean leg to Los Angeles takes about 14 days. The full trip to Chicago took 34.5 days in 2024. The two figures come from different sources, so the gap of about 20 days is only a rough guide. The total time also changes a lot. The trip through Seattle and Tacoma took 47.6 days in 2022 but 34.1 days in 2024.

Paperwork matters too. Importers must file an Importer Security Filing (ISF) at least 24 hours before cargo is loaded in China. A good customs clearance plan helps avoid holds at the U.S. port.

How to Plan Your Shipment

  1. Importers should match the port to the final address. East Coast buyers can compare the Panama route with the West Coast plus rail route.
  2. Importers should ask what the quote covers. A port-to-port quote and a door-to-door quote measure different trips.
  3. Importers should pick the right load type. A full container load (FCL) moves as one unit. A less-than-container load (LCL) shares a container, so it often needs extra warehouse days.
  4. Importers should plan the last mile. Efan's U.S. trucking and final-mile delivery service moves cargo from the port to a warehouse, store, or FBA center.

Port-to-port time shows only the voyage. Door-to-door time shows when goods reach your shelf. So importers should plan stock around the door-to-door number.
