A supplier’s factory quote may cover only one part of the final import cost. Beginners often search for “ex work price” when they see this type of offer. The standard terms are “ex-works price” and “EXW price.” This guide explains EXW in simple terms.
EXW means Ex Works. Under EXW, the seller delivers the goods by placing them at the buyer’s disposal at a named place. That place is often the seller’s factory or warehouse. The goods are ready for collection, but the seller does not have to load them onto the buyer’s vehicle.
HM Revenue & Customs explains that the seller makes the goods available at its premises or another named place. The seller does not have to load the collecting vehicle or clear the goods for export. EXW can apply to any transport mode.
An ex work price is the amount charged for goods made available at the named place. It usually covers the product and the packing required by the sales contract. It normally excludes loading, pickup, export clearance, international freight, insurance, import clearance, duties, taxes, and final delivery.
The contract determines the exact price. Incoterms do not set the product price or payment method. A buyer should never treat an EXW quote as the final landed cost.
The seller must supply the agreed goods and commercial invoice. The seller must pack and mark the goods as required. The seller must make them available at the exact named point and within the agreed time.
The seller usually does not arrange transport, load the collecting vehicle, or clear the goods for export. The seller may have to help with certain information at the buyer’s request, risk, and cost.
The buyer must pay for and collect the goods. The buyer normally arranges loading and all transport from the named place. The buyer also handles export, transit, and import formalities when they apply. The buyer pays freight charges, customs duties, taxes, and final delivery costs.
Neither party has an Incoterms duty to buy cargo insurance under EXW. The buyer may still choose insurance because the buyer takes risk early. The U.S. International Trade Administration lists EXW among the seven Incoterms 2020 rules for any mode of transport.
Risk passes when the seller makes the goods available at the agreed place and time. The goods are not loaded on the collecting vehicle at that point.
For example, a contract may state: “EXW Seller’s Warehouse, Shenzhen, China, Incoterms 2020.” The parties should also add the full address and collection point. EXW does not transfer legal ownership by itself. The sales contract must cover ownership.
EXW and FCA can both apply to road, air, sea, rail, or multimodal transport. However, the seller has different duties. Under EXW, the buyer usually loads the collecting vehicle and clears the goods for export. Under FCA at the seller’s premises, the seller loads the buyer’s vehicle and completes export clearance.
FCA is often more practical for international shipments. A foreign buyer may not be able to complete export formalities in the seller’s country. The seller may also need export records for tax or accounting purposes.
The buyer can start with the ex work price. The buyer can then add origin pickup, loading, export handling, customs documents, international freight, optional insurance, destination charges, duties, taxes, and final delivery.
A buyer should ask a freight forwarder for a full quote before accepting the supplier’s offer. Buyers who ship from China can also review the freight services at www.efanddp.com when planning transport beyond the factory.
EXW can work when the buyer has a reliable freight forwarder and understands the seller’s local export rules. It can also suit a domestic sale. However, EXW may be difficult for a new international buyer because the buyer controls almost the whole journey.
Both parties should state the exact place, point, date, and rule version. A clear clause can read: “EXW [full address and collection point], Incoterms 2020.” The buyer should compare the full landed cost, not only the factory price.
